Teresa Lily Dale Lodge Sacred Fire

The Inipi or Sweat Lodge is an ancient purification ceremony of the Lakota people and has been passed down through generations as sacred knowledge. The ceremony is one of the Seven Sacred Rites of the Lakota People ~ the full ceremony is not taught to non-Lakota’s.

Inipi means ‘to live again.’ The Inipi is a sacred place of spirit where one goes to cleanse the physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual body, and to pray. Calling upon the powers of the Universe ~ Air, Water, Fire & Earth this powerful ceremony cleanses and renews all of a person’s being. It’s a spiritual experience that reconnects us with our oneness ~ with the universe and nature.

The Lodge structure is made of saplings bent over to form a small dome high enough to crawl into and sit up in. People form a circle (or 2) around the center, where a “stone people’s pit” is located. Red-hot stones from the sacred fire are brought into the pit. Water is poured onto the stones, creating a “sacred breath” which helps us to center ourselves and pray.

The sweat lodge ceremony can last anywhere from one to several hours, depending on the lodge leader and the needs of those attending. All lodge leaders have many years of experience. No two ceremonies are alike. Appropriate attire for lodges includes shorts and T-shirts for men; women may choose the more traditional long (below knee) skirt and a T-shirt that covers the elbows. Gifts of tobacco or sage for the lodge leader and fire keeper, a potluck dish and donations are appreciated. There is never a charge for the ceremony.
